Honda Marine Science Foundation Awards Grants to Support Coastal and Marine Habitat Restoration Projects

“Living Shoreline” Projects Aim to Improve Shoreline Health in California and Coral Reef Health in Hawaii”

Honda Marine Science Foundation (HMSF) has awarded grants to fund four research projects that address the impact of climate change on the ocean and intertidal areas.  The projects focus on building “living shorelines” to restore marine habitats bordering the Pacific Ocean, and include Smithsonian Living Shorelines Project in San Francisco, California; Los Angeles Living Shoreline Project in Los Angeles, California; Zedler Marsh Living Shoreline Project in Long Beach, California; andLiving Shoreline Multipurpose Area on West Maui, Hawaii. HMSF awards up to $300,000 in grant funds annually.

Honda Marine Science Foundation supports “living shoreline” projects that implement natural approaches to protecting coastal habitats and communities while promoting harmonious interaction between humans and the ocean. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a living shoreline is a protected and stabilized shoreline that is comprised of natural materials such as plants, sand, or rock. In contrast to “hard” shoreline stabilization methods like concrete seawalls, which impede the growth of plants and animals, living shorelines grow over time.

“Honda Marine Science Foundation is committed to supporting living shoreline projects that address the impact of climate change,” said Raminta Jautokas, Honda Marine Science Foundation board member. “When considering options for coastal protection, historically we’ve chosen to construct hardscapes such as concrete walls. Living shorelines are an ideal solution for coastal protection because they improve water quality, help to protect against erosion, and provide habitat for marine species.”

Smithsonian Living Shorelines Project
This initiative by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is part of a large living shorelines project by the California Coastal Conservancy at Giant Marsh on the Richmond shoreline in California’s San Francisco Bay. Rockweed will be transplanted to ameliorate heat stress in restored intertidal oyster populations. Rockweed transplantation, a process that has not yet been studied in San Francisco Bay, could prove critical to the success of oyster living shorelines projects under future climate change scenarios.

Los Angeles Living Shoreline Project
To protect against sea level rise and coastal storms, this project by The Bay Foundation will enhance roughly three and a half acres of beach and coastal bluff habitat by restoring coastal bluff, sandy beach and near-shore eelgrass habitats. This project is vital to the preservation of natural ecosystems, as native flora has been almost completely eradicated across Los Angeles beaches. This habitat restoration will provide enhanced ecosystem services, including improved water quality, wildlife benefits, carbon sequestration, shoreline stabilization, and storm protection.

Zedler Marsh Living Shoreline Project
Zedler Marsh is one of the last surviving tidal wetlands in Los Angeles County. This 10-acre tidal wetland along the San Gabriel River in Long Beach, California, will be restored by the Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust by installing intertidal vegetation in order to protect the wetland marsh from future erosion, increase biodiversity, and improve water quality.

Living Shoreline Multipurpose Area
To improve coral reef health on West Maui, Hawaii, the Coral Reef Alliance will construct a living shoreline “green infrastructure” multipurpose area to reduce pollution from severely degraded watersheds. A natural watershed made of native vegetation effectively filters storm water and absorbs chemicals and nutrients that can be detrimental to coral reefs. By reducing sediment pollution on the coral reef and building community-centric green infrastructure, the project will provide both environmental and community benefits.

“Honda Marine Science Foundation is generously supporting the Coral Reef Alliance’s Clean Water for Reefs Initiative in Maui. The grant will help us slow stormwater, increase water infiltration and stop sediment from reaching the ocean and damaging coral reefs,” said Jos Hill, MAppSc MBA, associate program director, Coral Reef Alliance.

Promoting Environmental Education in the Community
Honda Marine Science Foundation partners with organizations that share its vision for improving and preserving coastal areas for future generations. As part of Honda’s longstanding relationship with the Aquarium of the Pacific, Honda Marine Science Foundation sponsors forums to brainstorm solutions to the most pressing and complex problems facing the ocean and environment.

In 2018, Honda Marine Science Foundation sponsored the National Summit on Coastal and Estuarine Restoration and Management in Long Beach, California, which is hosted by Restore America’s Estuaries and the Coastal States Organization. The foundation provided scholarships to students interested in coastal and estuarine science, providing them with the opportunity to attend the summit. Further, HMSF supports Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, the nonprofit that provides funding and resources to help the city-run Aquarium meet its mission “to be a trusted resource that inspires exploration, respect and conservation of Southern California marine life.”

Road Car vs. Race Car: Acura Pits NSX Supercar Against Racing Counterpart, the NSX GT3 Evo

A new video from Acura explores the relationship between the Acura NSX supercar and its race-winning counterpart, the NSX GT3 Evo. Currently #1 in the IMSA GT Daytona (GTD) point standings, NSX GT3 Evo driver Trent Hindman of Meyer Shank Racing demonstrates the distinctive approaches to performance of the two cars in 0-60 runs, braking tests, ease-of-use evaluations and, of course, ultimate lap times at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The production NSX showcases its strengths as a supercar designed to run with the world’s best exotics, while the NSX GT3 Evo demonstrates its chops as a purpose-built, razor-sharp race machine. Hindman’s conclusion: the NSX was born to be made into a brilliant race car.

 

Born to Race
One glance tells you the production NSX and NSX GT3 have much in common. After all, GT competition standards require race cars to maintain much of the same exterior character of their production counterparts. But the similarities are much more than skin deep. In fact, while the two are actually uniquely skinned – the production model with aluminum and composite panels, the GT3 dressed predominantly in exposed carbon fiber – they share more than 80-percent of their underlying component parts, reflecting the fact that racing was an essential part of the plan from the earliest stages of the NSX development.

“We knew from the outset that the second generation NSX would be tested at the highest limits on track,” said Ted Klaus, who served as global development leader for the second generation NSX and was recently named president of Honda Performance Development, the North American race engineering arm of Acura Motorsports. “Competitive racing was an essential consideration during NSX development, which influenced critical decisions we made regarding the car’s fundamental design.”

A Foundation for Speed 
The largest and most foundational shared component is the NSX’s ultra-rigid, lightweight, aluminum-intensive space frame, which the GT3 uses in competition without significant modification. In designing the NSX body structure, engineers were keenly aware that exceptional rigidity was essential to the performance of NSX, enabling its sharp and immediate responses to driver inputs and amplifying the capacities of its hybrid power unit and electric torque vectoring system.

The NSX and NSX GT3 Evo space frames are constructed at Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio1. The PMC is the first plant in the automotive world to utilize 100-percent robotic MIG welding for body construction. In this unique approach, eight high-precision robots are used in concert with specially designed rotisserie-style jigs to apply 860 MIG welds with incredible precision. The PMC also monitors quality variances in the space frame’s tolerance down to the width of a human hair.

A Tale of Two Power Units
A next generation supercar is worthy of a next generation powertrain. The NSX road car combines a bespoke 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and world’s only 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) with a three motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system, working in concert to produce 5732 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. Unlike other hybrid supercars, not only is electric power used to fill the “torque well” of a turbocharged engine, the NSX’s front-mounted Twin Motor Unit (TMU) is capable of delivering both positive and negative torque independently to the front wheels. In this respect, the production NSX stands alone in the universe of supercars past and present: the only exotic using electric motors to enhance every element of dynamic performance – acceleration, braking and cornering.

By contrast, the NSX GT3 Evo, in keeping with the rear-drive-only requirement of GT3 competition, eschews the production model’s hybrid componentry, relying solely on a lightly modified version of the production model’s 3.5-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine. Like the NSX body, the NSX’s bespoke engine was designed from the outset to support racing applications, and the GT3 engine is remarkably similar to its street-able counterpart, using the same design specifications as the engine in the production NSX, including the block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons and dry-sump lubrication system. The race engine is paired with a six-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox, delivering power to the rear wheels. Both the NSX road and race engines are meticulously hand assembled by a small group of master technicians in a purpose-built facility at the company’s engine manufacturing plant in Anna, Ohio.

NSX GT3 Winning Globally
Since its debut in early 2017, the NSX GT3 and GT3 Evo have tackled some of the world’s most iconic GT races, including the 24 Hours of Daytona and Spa; the 12 Hours of Sebring; Petit Le Mans; and the FIA GT World Cup in Macau. Currently, the NSX GT3 Evos campaigned by Meyer Shank Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship lead the points for both Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championships in the GTD class. In the Blancpain GT World Challenge America series, the NSX GT3 Evo has earned six pro-am wins with three different teams (3-Racers Edge, 2-RealTime Racing, 1-Gradient Racing). Around the world, the NSX GT3 Evo driven by Autobacs Racing Team (ARTA) leads the GT300 class in the Japanese Super GT series with two podium finishes. Additionally, the NSX GT3 Evo has competed in the Blancpain GT Series Asia, China GT Championship, select events in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, the Blancpain GT Sports Club and GT Series in Europe, and the ADAC GT Masters in Germany.

About Trent Hindman
At 23 years old, Trent Hindman has already enjoyed an enviable racing career. Beginning at age eight racing karts at a local and regional level, the New Jersey native eventually developed into a national karting champion by 2008. In 2010, he made the transition into racing formula cars, ultimately becoming a recipient of the Team USA Scholarship in 2011, followed by a top-five run in the 2012 USF2000 championship. From there, Hindman graduated to sports car racing, and in 2014 became the youngest driver to win a Michelin Pilot Challenge championship at just 19 years old. Hindman joined Meyer Shank Racing for three races in 2018, driving the NSX GT3 to second-place finishes at Daytona and Petit Le Mans. This year, Hindman and co-driver Mario Farnbacher currently lead the IMSA GTD driver’s championship, fresh off a recent victory at Watkins Glen.

Acura Widens Championship Lead with Podium Finishes at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park

Acura Motorsports’ run of podium finishes continued today at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, with the manufacturer extending or taking over the championship lead in all Daytona Prototype International and GTD categories for the first time in the 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

The Meyer Shank Racing duo of Mario Farnbacher and Trent Hindman led the way for Acura at today’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix Presented by Acura, finishing second in GTD in their Acura NSX GT3 Evo; while Dane Cameron and Juan Pablo Montoya finished third overall and in DPi in their Acura Team Penske ARX-05.

Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
Starting third in GTD, Hindman and Farnbacher’s second-place performance today is their third podium result in five championship rounds this season, including a class win for the pair last weekend at Watkins Glen International Raceway and a second-place finish at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in May. The pair now holds a 19-point lead in the GTD Drivers’ Championship standings, with 151 points to 132 for rivals Townsend Bell and Franck Montecalvo.

In the second MSR Acura, Katherine Legge and co-driver Bia Figueiredo started fourth and ran fifth throughout most of the two-hour, 40-minute contest, but lost one position following a late-race restart to end the day sixth in GTD.

Today’s results also saw Acura leapfrog Lamborghini to assume the GTD Manufacturers’ Championship lead for the first time this season.  After five of 10 races, Acura now has 152 points to 149 for Lexus and 148 for Lamborghini.  Ferrari and BMW are next, tied with 135 points.

In DPi, Cameron and starting driver Montoya also increased their Drivers’ Championship advantage with a third-place run in their Acura ARX-05 prototype, and now have 207 points each after seven of 10 championship races. Second-ranked Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani now have 204 points apiece after finishing fourth.

Meanwhile, with a fifth-place result today, Acura Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves and Ricky Taylor remain a solid third in the drivers’ title fight with 198 points, 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Today’s results also enabled Acura to increase its lead in the DPi Manufacturers’ Championship, with 230 points to 227 for Cadillac, 216 for Mazda and 202 for Nissan.

Honda Begins Final Phase of Takata Non-desiccated Airbag Inflator Recall Six Months Ahead of NHTSA Schedule

  • Phase 5 to occur ahead of NHTSA schedule due to significant Acura and Honda repair progress on existing recalls and adequate replacement parts supplies to repair all affected models
  • Prior to this expansion, Honda’s overall Takata inflator recall completion rate was 83.0%, including yearly scheduled recall expansions since May 2016
  • Since Phase 5 primarily includes Takata non-desiccated replacement inflators used in early recall repairs, the total number of recalled Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. does not change significantly with this action

In the fifth and final phase of planned recalls announced by NHTSA in May 2016, Honda will conduct recalls covering approximately 1.6 million Honda and Acura automobiles in the United States to replace, for free, Takata replacement front airbag inflators that do not contain a moisture absorbing desiccant. With this final action, taken six months ahead of NHTSA’s schedule, Honda has now recalled all Takata non-desiccated airbag inflators installed in Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States.

The inflators included in Phase 5 were used as replacement parts during early Takata airbag inflator recall repairs or were part of whole airbag modules replaced for other reasons prior to February 2017. Excluding vehicles subject to the earlier Takata driver airbag inflator recalls, only 59 additional Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S. will become subject to a Takata airbag inflator recall for the first time because of this action.

Honda decided to take this action early, ahead of NHTSA’s planned expansion date in late December 2019, because it has made significant progress with existing recall repairs (83.0% completion rate as of 6/7/2019). The company also has adequate replacement parts, all from alternative suppliers, to repair all affected Acura and Honda models, including those in the expanded population. Thus, owners of affected vehicles should seek repair immediately at authorized Honda and Acura dealers.

In addition, all Honda Gold Wing motorcycles equipped with defective inflators in the U.S. were included in earlier recalls and remain eligible for repair. There have been no Takata airbag inflator ruptures involving Honda motorcycles globally. Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to schedule repair at an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Mailed notification to owners of recalled vehicles will begin in mid-August 2019. The total number of recalled inflators does rise to approximately 22.6 million in approximately 12.9 million Honda and Acura automobiles that have been or now are subject to recall for replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator in the United States. In addition, approximately 4,540 Honda Gold Wing motorcycles are subject to recall for the replacement of the Takata airbag inflator module. No motorcycle products are involved in the recall announced today.

Team Honda Serves Local Communities Across North America

Over 25,000 Volunteers Participated During Annual Week of Service

More than 25,000 volunteers participated in the 4th annual Team Honda Week of Service June 7-16, conducting nearly 600 service activities that highlight the vital work of local community organizations throughout North America.

Honda associates, along with the company’s dealers and suppliers conducted group volunteer activities in 42 states, Canada and Mexico. The Week of Service coincides with Honda’s Founder’s Day in North America, which marks the establishment of the first Honda business operation in America, on June 11, 1959. This year also marks Honda’s 60th anniversary of beginning business operations in America.

“Honda’s Week of Service continues to grow and we are grateful to our associates and to those who join us in giving back to the communities where we work and live during this special week,” said Jeffrey Smith, vice president, Honda North America, Inc. “Team Honda has become a powerful force for good, demonstrating that by working together we can truly build nurturing communities.”

“We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the hundreds of dealers and suppliers who dedicated their time, people and resources to this nationwide volunteer effort. Honda deeply appreciates their generous spirit of support for their local communities,” Smith said.

The more than 25,000 volunteers throughout North America supported local communities through a wide range of more than 600 service activities, from food and blood drives, to adopt-a-pet events, beach and park clean-ups, collection of school supplies and home repair for people in need.

The community impact from this year’s Team Honda Week of Service included:

  • 592,000 meals served;
  • 65 tons of food collected and sorted;
  • 2,210 pints of blood donated; and
  • Nearly $100,000 raised for nonprofit organizations

One of the organizations benefiting from the Team Honda Week of Service spoke to the positive impact the Honda service activity had in local communities.

“I am so grateful for this wonderful event,” said Reginale Durandisse, founder and CEO of For The Children Inc., which received assistance from the Braman Honda automobile dealer in West Palm Beach, Fla. “There were some very happy and deserving children who received their bikes today.”

Honda observed its 60th anniversary in North America on June 11, 2019, and will mark 40 years of production on Sept. 2019.
